Sharing the
Penn Yan
Deja vu
On This Page: Maps, Videos and Photos of Grammy's Grave Site and the Ketcham cemetery plot at Lakeview Cemetery in Penn Yan. After that, videos and photos of Penn Yan area just taken this past weekend (Saturday, August 7, 2010).
Background: Ronnie told me something I never knew before. He said he once asked Grammy what her favorite flower was and she said "Peonies (Paeonia)." I just knew that she liked flowers in general and she had a very green thumb. Ronnie said that he planted Peonies (Paeonia) at Grammy's grave and he asked if I'd ever been to the grave site. He wanted to know if the Peonies (Paeonia) were still there. I had never been to the grave site, so I vowed to visit this summer and said I would plant Peonies (Paeonia) flowers at the site if there were none.
Finding Grammy's Plot: The only directions I had for finding the plot were sketchy at best. Dad and Ronnie both told me that when you enter through the cemetery gates, the plot is "not too far in and is more to the left than to the right." The problem is -- there are 3-4 gate entrances to the cemetery and the cemetery is a sprawling, mammoth place with enormous 'real estate' to the left of each entrance gate.
Finding Grammy's Plot: I first went to Gate 2 thinking it was the main gate, and searched for about 45 minutes, but found nothing. Then I searched for about 45 minutes at another gate and found nothing. I saw a woman walking her two dogs and asked if she knew anything about the plots. She said she remembered seeing a "Ketcham" plot, and she proceeded with an intricate set of directions. She was right, the Ketcham stone was right where she said it was, but it wasn't Grammy's plot. Just a lone solitary marker.
Finding Grammy's Plot: I was within minutes of 'giving up' in the belief that the effort was futile and I'd need to contact the grounds-keeper during the week for a precise location. He doesn't work on the weekends. But as I turned around to head back to my car, I perused the head-stones on the way back to the car and there it was, Grammy's head-stone, pretty much just where Dad and Ronnie had described.
Mapping the Location: Once I finally found it, I was determined to map it out in detail so if anyone else ever went looking for it, they'd have pinpoint precise directions for finding it. Also, I wanted everyone to be able to 'visit' Grammy's Memorial plot, even if they could not actually come to Penn Yan to see it. So here it is. Now you can visit Grammy's grave site often, to pay your respects, right HERE on this page. The Maps, Videos and the Photo Slides provide a vivid experience of visiting Grammy's grave site and seeing Penn Yan -- just as Grammy left it. What a beautiful, peaceful, tranquil place she chose to live her entire Life. Grammy was a very, very wise soul. We are so lucky to have been able to share that beautiful, insightful Life.
With Love,
Gary

Does anyone know - Are these 'Peonies (Paeonia)' flowers to the right and just behind of Grammy's head-stone?
